Simple Formula for Diluting Solutions

The following is a simple method to dilute solutions

A = Strength (%) of the solution to be diluted

B = Diluting solution (%) <water = 0>

S = Desired strength

Procedure:

1. S - B = X

2. A - S = Y

3. X parts A + Y parts B = S

Example: Dilute 10% povidone iodine to 2%

1. 2 – 0 = 2 (2% desired – 0% <water> = 2
2. 10 – 2 = 8 (10% povidone – 2% desired = 8
3. 2 parts povidone + 8 parts water = 2% solution
