The pit system was used historically in southern India until the late 1970's, when capture by darting with chemical agents became the norm.  The scene above is from this region, which supports the largest number of elephants in India today.  If you want to see wild Asian elephants, this is  perhaps the best place to do so.  Your tourist dollars help justify the expense of protecting elephant range like this.
